WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Baseball America ranked Hornback the 65th best prospect in Texas. At least some scouts seem to like his glove and BA characterized his defensive skills as solid. He was an average hitter on his team in both years at San Jacinto North. He had a commitment to Mississippi, but he signed at the end of June, which probably indicates he didn’t get much above slot.
2011 Didn’t do much at the plate in the GCL beyond putting up good walk and K numbers. He threw out 22% of base stealers. 2012 Hornback went to State College, where he shared catching duties with Jacob Stallings initially. He suffered a groin injury in mid-July, though, and missed the rest of the season. The Pirates could return Hornback to the New York-Penn League or he could move up to West Virginia in 2013. He was still hampered by the groin injury in training camp, though, so that could impact the start of his season. |
