PROFILE

McGarry pitched in relief in college, possibly in part due to injury problems during his first two years that limited him to 21.1 IP total. A strong showing in the Cape Cod League season in the summer of 2014 probably helped get him on the map. He put up a 2.25 ERA and .245 BAA, with 35 strikeouts in 40 innings in 2015. McGarry could get his four-seam fastball up to 97 MPH and it had good movement.  In 2016, though, he switched to a two-seam fastball, sacrificing velocity for a chance of better command.  He’s thrown in the low-90s since then.  Scouts consider his curve and change to be fringy, although the latter has shown some improvement.  Baseball America ranked him 270th in their list of the top 500 draft prospects. McGarry signed right after the draft.

2015
R:  1-1-0, 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 12.0 IP, 0.8 BB/9, 6.8 K/9
A-:  2-2-0, 4.62 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 39.0 IP, 5.3 BB/9, 8.1 K/9

The Pirates sent McGarry to the GCL initially, possibly in recognition of the likelihood that he’s going to be something of a project.  After three starts there, he moved up to Morgantown and made nine starts before the end of the season.  He generally had trouble throwing strikes, but he still held hitters to a 208/319/306 line.  He had some trouble with left-handed hitters, allowing them a .705 OPS, as opposed to a .561 figure against right-handed hitters.

2016
A:  4-4-9, 3.79 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 59.1 IP, 4.1 BB/9, 8.9 K/9

McGarry spent the season in the West Virginia bullpen, sometimes acting as closer.  He had just a fair season, partly due to control problems.  Opponents had a 260/348/395 line against him, with all of those figures comfortably above the league averages of 250/319/372.  McGarry especially struggled late in the season, posting an ERA of 4.43 and WHIP of 1.61 from July 1 on.  He had a reverse platoon split this time, possibly due to an improved change, with a .676 opponents’ OPS against left-handed hitters and .795 against right-handed hitters.

McGarry will move up to Bradenton in 2017.
