Q&A: The Off-Season Roster Decisions

In the last few weeks I’ve talked about the positional recaps for the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 2010 season, leading to my evaluation of the off-season needs heading in to the 2011 season.  That also brought on the 2011 40-man roster and payroll, which at this stage includes some predictions on how the Pirates will […]

Candidates To Be Added To The 40-Man Roster

The Pirates not only will face a lot of difficult decisions in removing players from the 40-man roster, but also in adding them.  Two factors contributing to the crunch are the numerous trades in which the team acquired prospects and surprising seasons from several players who’ve been around a while.  What follows is a list […]

Pirates claim Penn off waivers, DFA Moss

The Pirates have claimed Marlins’ pitcher Hayden Penn off waivers. Penn is out of options, so he must be placed on the 25-man roster. A corresponding roster move must be made to make room for him on the 40-man as well. [Link] UPDATE (3:20 PM): Jen Langosch reports that the Pirates have designated Brandon Moss […]

Do not overlook internal options

Pirate fans have mostly supported adding a second-rate free agent to team with Garrett Jones in covering the right field/first base spots. Even Frank Coonelly got in on the fun, with Rick Ankiel’s name coming up specifically. It seems like a harmless idea, seeing as the Pirates do not have many inspiring options for those […]

Charlie Morton tossed six shutout innings to earn his first win as a Pirate, allowing one single and four walks. The Pirates offense gave him seven runs of support, which was nearly eventually needed as Florida scored four times late off the Pittsburgh bullpen. Brandon Moss and Ramon Vazquez both homered and knocked in two runs. […]

Duke’s Hurling Snaps Loss Streak

I never would’ve thought to describe Zach Duke as a stopper. But he came through in a huge way to end the Pirates recent skid that delivered them from above .500 to the cellar. Duke allowed just one run on four hits over 8 innings. It looked ugly early on. He allowed a two out […]
