Alderson Gets The Win And A Homer; Welker Promoted

Roster moves: Relief pitcher Duke Welker has been promoted from West Virginia to the Bradenton Marauders. Welker had made 20 relief appearances for the Power, earning a 1-1 record and 5 saves, with a 3.63 ERA. In 22.1 in innings, Welker gave up 16 hits, 14 runs (9 earned), with 24 walks and 25 strikeouts. Opponents hit .198 against him.

The Pirates have signed INFYung Chi Chen to a minor league contract and assigned him to Altoona. Chen had been playing for the AA Midland RockHounds (A's), but was released in early June. He had been hitting .168 for Midland, with 5 doubles and 9 RBI in 28 games. The Taiwan native has been a member of the Taiwan National Team, and was signed by the Mariners in 2004. He played for AAA Tacoma in 2007 for just a few games before being sidelined with a shoulder injury, and in 69 games in 2008, when he hit .249. Chen was claimed off waivers by the A's in late 2008. He split the 2009 season between AAA Sacramento (where he hit .283 with one homer and 8 RBI in 27 games), AA Midland (.324 and 10 RBI in 17 games) and the Arizona League A's (.346 with one homer and 8 RBI in 8 games). Chen appeared in his first game for the Curve on June 30th, when he went 0-for3 with 2 strikeouts.

Thursday's action:

Altoona Curve 7, Reading Phillies 1 (box)

Tim Alderson earned his 7th win for the Curve, and he contributed to the offense too, with a 2-run homer. It was not the first homer of Alderson's career, though. He hit one last year for the Curve and another, also last season, while pitching for Connecticut, while he was still in the Giants' organization.

Alderson got into some trouble right away in the 1st inning, when he gave up what would turn out to be the R-Phils' only run on a 2-out double and a single. Then Alderson settled down, scattering a two more hits and two walks over the next 5 innings. He retired the last 7 batters he faced in order.

After allowing that run in the bottom of the 1st, Alderson took care of the problem himself in the top of the 2nd. LF Brandon Jones singled, and Alderson gave the Curve a 2-1 lead with his 2-run homer over the left field wall. The Curve added 4 more runs in the 5th inning. With one out, 2B Josh Harrison and 1B Matt Hague hit back-to-back singles. 3B Jordy Mercer's grounder to first forced out Hague at second, but the R-Phils could not turn it into a double play to end the inning. Instead, they gave C Hector Gimenez a chance, and he took it -- a double into center field, scoring both Harrison from third and Mercer all the way from first. Jones singled, bringing in Gimenez, and a fielding error in center field allowed Jones to advance to second base. That gave him the opportunity to score on RF Miles Durham's RBI single.

The next 11 Curve batters went down in order, until CF Gorkys Hernandez singled with one out in the 9th. A passed ball let Hernandez move up to second base, and he scored on Hague's RBI single. Mercer also singled and Gimenez walked to load the bases, but a ground out ended the inning before the Curve could add to their run tally.

Derek Hankins earned his 3rd save for the Curve with 3 scoreless innings of work. He gave up a walk and a single over those 3 innings, while striking out 2 batters.

Jakubauskas Makes Rehab Start; Sanchez’s Jaw Broken

Tuesday's action in the Pirates' lower minor league organization

GCL Yankees 11, GCL Pirates 4 (box)

Chris Jakubauskas, who suffered a concussion while pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates back in April, made his first appearance in a real game today, with the GCL Pirates. He pitched 3 innings, and suffered the loss as he gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He did strike out 5 batters. Jakubauskas retired the Yankees in order in the 1st inning, then gave up a run on a triple and a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. He allowed a lone walk in the 3rd inning, but began the 4th with a single, a double, and a 3-run homer, followed by another single.

Joan Montero finished the 4th for Jakubauskas, then gave up a run on a single, a wild pitch, and four walks in the 5th. Dovydas Neverauskas completed the 5th, and gave up 2 runs in the 6th, ona double, a walk, and a 2-RBI single. The Yankees scored 4 runs in the 8th, though only one was earned. The inning began with a throwing error b 2B Luis Solano, then a double and a single both brought in a run. Another fielding error and two more singles gave the Yankees a total of 11 runs. Rinku Singh pitched a scoreless 9th inning for the Pirates, allowing a single and a walk, then getting a line-out into a double play before ending the inning with a strikeout.

The Pirates' bats could not keep up with the Yankees. They scored one run in the 2nd, when C Elias Diaz led off with a double, was sacrifice bunted to third, and scored on a fielder's choice by Solano. The Pirates added a run in the 4th. RF Gregory Polanco led off with a single up the middle. A grounder by LF Exicardo Cayonez forced Polanco out at second but left Cayonez at first. Cayonez stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Yankees' catcher. He scored on a wild pitch. Another error contributed to the Pirates' run in the 6th. SS Kevin Mort singled and 3B Eric Avila and Diaz both walked. The fielding error on Solano's ball to short allowed Mort to score. Polanco scored the Pirates' final run in the 8th, when he doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on Cayonez's RBI single.

Morgan Homers Twice; Welker Saves #4

The Indianapolis Indians had a scheduled day off today.

Reports are that 1B/OF Steve Pearce, who is working his way back from a sprained ankle, played in an extended Spring Training game today in Bradenton. He went 1-for-5 at the plate.

West Virginia Power 5, Hickory Crawdads 3 (box)

The Power snapped their losing streak with a win in Hickory tonight, led by DH Kyle Morgan and his two home runs. After two quiet innings, Morgan got things started in the top of the 3rd with a solo home run over the right-center field wall. SS Benji Gonzalez followed the homer with a single, then stole second base (his 9th steal of the season). A double by CF David Rubinstein plated Gonzalez, and a single by 2B Jarek Cunningham brought in Rubinstein. Cunningham also stole second base (his 3rd of the year).

The Crawdads tied it up with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kyle McPherson had the first batter reach on an error by 3B Jesus Brito, then gave up back-to-back singles to load the bases. A double cleared the bases, and those 3 runs tied it up.

But the Power were not done. Both RF Jose Hernandez and Morgan blasted solo homers (not back-to-back) in the 4th inning, and the Power had the lead again.

That was all the scoring in the game. Brito and Cunningham were the only Power batters to reach base over the remaining 5 innings, both on walks. The Crawdads did not fare any better --McPherson retired the next 11 batters he faced over the 4th through the 7th innings. He gave up a 2-out triple in the 7th, but got the next batter to strike out. Ryan Kelly pitched a perfect 8th inning, and Duke Welker pitched a perfect 9th, including two strikeouts. McPherson was credited with his 5th win, and Welker with his 4th save.

Altoona Is No-Hit Victim in Night Cap

Game 1: Altoona Curve 3, Harrisburg Senators 2 (box)

The Curve got the evening off to a good start in the first of two 7-inning games, as they made up for the rain-out on Wednesday. C Kris Watts led the offense with 2 hits and SS Chase d'Arnaud drove in 2 of the Curve runs.

Harrisburg scored first, with a run in the 2nd inning on two singles, a wild pitch by Altoona starter Tim Alderson, and a sacrifice fly. The Curve tried to respond in the bottom of the inning, when Watts and LF Anthony Norman both singled, and Alderson walked to load the bases. All three were left on base when a line out ended the inning. But the Curve got the job done in the 4th inning. RF Alex Presley led off by beating out a bunt for a single. Watts lined another single into left field. 3B Shelby Ford dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and when the Harrisburg third baseman threw wide of first base for an error, Presley raced around to score, leaving Watts on third and Ford on second. An intentional walk to Norman brought up Alderson, who flied out for the first out of the inning. Then d'Arnaud ripped a line drive into left field, scoring both Watts and Ford. The Curve came close to getting another run, when CF Gorkys Hernandez flied out to right field, but instead of that being a sacrifice fly, Norman was thrown out at the plate after tagging up.

Alderson gave up another run in the top of the 5th, on a single, a stolen base, and another single. He pitched a total of 6 innings and allowed those 2 runs on 7 hits and a walk, with 3 strikeouts. Alderson earned his 5th win of the season, giving him a 5-2 record. Danny Moskos earned his 14th save of the season by pitching a perfect 7th inning.

Game 2: Senators 1, Curve 0 (box)

The second game was another story. SS Chase d'Arnaud led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk. He was immediately erased when CF Gorkys Hernandez bounced into a double play. And that was it. No more Curve base runners, no hits, no more walks, no one reaching on an error or being hit by a pitch. Just another 19 outs, 21 all together (it was a 7-inning game, as part of the double-header). Harrisburg starter Chuck James pitched 5 innings and struck out 7, including striking out 6 Curve batters in a row in the 3rd and 4th innings. Reliever Cole Kimball pitched a perfect 6th including 2 more strikeouts. Reliever Zech Zinicola pitched the 7th, another perfect inning with two strikeouts.

And, as if that weren't bad enough -- it was even worse for Curve starter Rudy Owens. He pitched 7 innings and allowed only one run on 7 hits, no walks, with one strikeout, and still suffered the loss (his 3rd of the season). Owens worked around a single in the 2nd and a double in the 3rd to keep the game scoreless. He gave up a double and hit a batter in the 4th, but still did not allow a run. Harrisburg's only run came in the 5th, with 2 outs, on 3 consecutive singles. Owens allowed one more single in the 6th, then removed that base runner with a double play. Jimmy Barthmaier pitched a scoreless 7th inning, also allowing just one single and also eliminating that threat with a double play.

Late-Inning Rallies Sting Curve; Power Explode in Late Innings

New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5, Altoona Curve 3 (box)

The Curve took the early lead with a 3-run 2nd inning, but two late-inning 2-run rallies gave the Fisher Cats the win on Saturday. Curve batters took advantage of walks in the 2nd inning. They loaded the bases with no outs on a double by 1B Matt Hague, 2B Jordy Mercer being hit by a pitch, and a walk to DH Jim Negrych. LF Alex Presley singled up the middle, scoring both Hague and Mercer. Walks to C Kris Watts and SS Chase d'Arnaud forced in the third run of the inning.

Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Curve would do. They put runners on base in several other innings, but could not push any of them around to score. They came closest in the 8th, when Hague and Mercer both singled in the 8th, and a throwing error got Hague as far as third base, but he got no further. Presley singled to lead off the 4th, but could not advance. Mercer walked in the 3rd, but was erased in the double play, and Hague walked in the 5th. In their final chance, Watts walked with two outs in the 9th, but a strikeout by d'Arnaud ended the game.

Starter Bryan Morris pitched 6 dominating innings, but was not involved in the decision. He allowed only two hits in those 6 innings, a single in the 2nd inning, and a solo homer to 3B Shawn Bowman in the 4th. Morris also allowed a walk in the 6th, and he struck out 4 batters.

Jeff Sues took over for Morris to begin the 7th, and that's when the Fisher cats were able to make their move. After a strikeout, Sues gave up a ground-rule double, a wild pitch, and two walks, loading the bases. He was relieved by Mike Dubee. The first batter Dubee faced grounded right up the middle, and though Dubee tried to get it, the ball was deflected off his glove as it zoomed into center field, scoring two runners to tie the score at 3-3. Dubee got out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out. But the Fisher Cats came right back at Dubee in the 8th. Four consecutive singles led off the inning, driving in two more runs and New Hampshire took the lead. The Curve could not answer in the 9th, and the Fisher Cats had the win.

Wins for Alderson and Baker, Three Hits For Rubinstein

Saturday night in the lower minor leagues:

Altoona Curve 7, Reading Phillies 3 (box)

Four runs in the 4th inning gave the Curve the edge and propelled starter Tim Alderson to his 4th win of the season. Alderson pitched 6 innings and allowed just one run on 4 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5 batters.

The Curve scored a run in the bottom of the 1st, on a lead-off walk by SS Chase d'Arnaud, singles by CF Gorkys Hernandez and 3B Josh Harrison, and a grounder by 1B Matt Hague that became a double play (no RBI for Hague). The Phillies' run came in the 2nd inning. Former Indy Indian 3B Tagg Bozied began the inning with a single, and went to second on a wild pitch. A walk and a grounder put Bozied on third base, and another single drove Bozied across the plate to tie the score.

The big 4th inning began with a single by LF Alex Presley. A passed ball put Presley on second. After a walk by RF Miles Durham, Alderson dropped down a sacrifice bunt that went for a fielder's choice as Presley made it to third base before the throw. With the bases loaded, Chase d'Arnaud walked, forcing in Presley with the go-ahead run. Gorkys Hernadez's sacrifice fly plated Durham, and Josh Harrison's double into right field scored both Alderson and d'Arnaud.

C Hector Gimenez blasted his third home run in three games with a 2-run shot in the 7th, following a single by Hague.

Alderson allowed 2 hits and 2 walks over the last 4 innings he pitched. Jack Taschner, with the Curve on a rehab assignment, pitched the 7th inning. He retired the first two batters, then gave up a single, a walk, and an RBI single for one run. The inning ended on a pop out.

Mike Dubee pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. Danny Moskos pitched the 9th, and allowed a run on two singles, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly.

Josh Harrison and Alex Presley each had a double and a single for the Curve, and both Harrison and Gimenez contributed 2 RBI.

Curve Win Lucky 7th Straight; Krol Earns Lucky 13th Save;

Altoona Curve 5, Akron Aeros 3 (box)

Rudy Owens earned his 4th win of the season, as the Curve won their 7th straight game and moved to 4 games ahead of second-place Richmond in the Eastern League's Western Division.SS Chase d'Arnaud belted 3 hits and four Curve batters had 2 hits each, including a homer by C Hector Gimenez.

After two quiet innings by both teams, LF Alex Presley opened the 3rd inning with an infield single, and Gimenez homered to give the Curve a 2-0 lead. The Aeros got one run back in the bottom of the inning. LF John Drennen led off with a triple. The next batter, 2B Criston Arnal, bounced back to the mound, and in the ensuing run-down, Drennen was tagged out, but he stalled long enough for Arnal to reach second base safely. A passed ball put Arnal on third base, and a ground out brought him across the plate.

Four singles, by 2B Josh Harrison, DH Matt Hague, RF Miles Durham, and Presley brought in two more Curve runs in the top of the 4th inning. Akron again came back with one run in the bottom of the frame, on a double, a ground out, and a balk by Owens. The Curve got that run back in the top of the 5th. D'Arnaud doubled to begin the inning, and scored on Hague's second single, to give the Curve a 5-2 lead.

Owens gave up just those two runs over 7 innings of work, on 2 hits and a walk, plus the balk and the passed ball by Gimenez. He also struck out 2 batters. Ronald Uviedo pitched the 8th inning, and gave up one run on two walks and a single plus an RBI grounder. Danny Moskos earned his 11th save, retiring the side in the 9th.

Moskos Saves #9, Krol Saves #10

Another day with one afternoon game and two evening games in the lower part of the Pirates' minor league affiliates:

Altoona Curve 2, Akron Aeros 1 (box)

The Curve and the Aeros could have skipped all the other innings and just played the 7th -- that was the only one that turned out to matter. After 6 scoreless innings from starter Rudy Owens, reliever Dustin Molleken took the mound for the 7th. He got the first out, then gave up back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second bases. One more out, then another single to drive in the run for Akron.

Altoona returned fire with a pair of one-out back-to-back singles in the 7th, by LF Alex Presley and RF Miles Durham. C Kris Watts loaded the bases with a walk. SS Chase d'Arnaud drove in both Presley and Durham with a double into right field. CF Gorkys Hernandez loaded the bases again by beating out an infield single to third base, but an inning-ending double play cut the rally short.

Owens worked around 4 hits and two batters reaching on errors over his 6 innings. He struck out 3 Akron batters. Molleken pitched only that 7th inning. Danny Moskos pitched the final two innings to earn his 9th save of the season. He had a batter reach on an error by 3B Jordy Mercer in the 8th, but promptly picked the runner off first base. Moskos walked a batter in the 9th, but erased him in a double play.

The Curve posted 10 hits, including 2 each by Chase d'Arnaud, 1B Matt Hague, and Alex Presley, with both d'Arnaud and Presley collecting a double each. DH Jim Negrych walked twice and stole second base in the 1st inning. The Curve came close to scoring in the 2nd inning, when Hague led off with a single, and Presley doubled, but Hague was thrown out at the plate. They also had the bases loaded with one out in the 3rd -- back-to-back singles by Watts and Presley, then a walk to Negrych. That time a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning without a run scoring.

Marauders Win Pitching Duel

Bradenton Marauders 1, Fort Myers Miracle 0 (box)

The Marauders were out-hit 4 -2, but they needed only one hit to score the only run of the game and beat the Miracle on Friday night. Bradenton starter Brian Leach pitched 4 innings and worked around at least one base runner in three of them -- a walk in the 1st, two singles in the 2nd, and one more single in the 3rd. All four runners were left stranded. After retiring the side in order in the 4th, Leach was relieved by Casey Erickson to begin the 5th. Erickson pitched 3 innings and allowed only one single in the 6th, then had C Tony Sanchez throw that runner out trying to steal second base. Diego Moreno pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, and Noah Krol bounced back from his tough appearance last night to retire the side in order in the 9th, earning his 8th save.

At the same time, Miracle starter Bruce Pugh was busy mowing down the Marauders' hitters. He struck out 10 batters in his 7 innings of work. He gave up only one walk, to lead-off batter SS Brock Holt in the 1st inning, then picked Holt off and caught him stealing. Pugh then retired the next 13 Bradenton batters, until 3B Jeremy Farrell reached base on an error in the 5th. Farrell was left on base, as Pugh struck out two to end the inning, then two more to begin the 6th. Holt singled with two outs in the 6th, but was also left on base. Pugh also struck out two in the 7th. He was relieved by Loek Van Mil to begin the 8th, and the Marauders found some luck. Van Mil hit DH Eric Fryer with a pitch to begin his inning. 1B Erik Huber singled, moving Fryer to third base. 2B Greg Picart grounded to third base, and Fryer scored on a fielder's choice. A double play ended the inning, but the Marauders had all the runs they needed.

Six Scoreless For Morris In Loss; Hughes Wins #6

Daytona Cubs 2, Bradenton Marauders 1 (box)

Starter Bryan Morris pitched 6 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk, while striking out 4 Cubs' batters. Unfortunately he did not earn a win, as the Marauders lost in extra innings. Morris had to work around a fielding error and a walk in the top of the 1st inning, but got out of the frame leaving two runners on base. He allowed only one base runner over the next 4 innings, and that was a double to lead off the 4th. Back-to-back singles began the 6th inning, and a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but Morris got a strikeout and a pop out to end that inning.

The Marauders were also held scoreless over the first 5 innings. They had at least one runner on base in each of those innings, but base running errors erased two of the runners. Four runners were left on base, two after singles and two after walks. Finally in the 6th, Daytona starter Brooks Raley was relieved, and the Marauders got going. With one out, four consecutive singles, by C Tony Sanchez, LF Quincy Latimore, 3B Jeremy Farrell, and 1B Calvin Anderson brought in one run, and the Marauders had a slim lead.

Casey Erickson took over for Morris to begin the 7th inning. He retired the side in order in the 7th, but then gave up a run on a double and a single in the 8th to tie the game. SS Brock Holt singled in the bottom of the 7th, but was left stranded. They also went down in order in the 8th and 9th, and the game went into extras.

Noah Krol relieved Erickson to begin the 9th. He gave up a lead-off single, but did not let that runner score. Then in the top of the 10th, a walk, a stolen base, and a triple brought in the go-ahead run for Daytona. The Marauders could not respond in the bottom of the inning, and Krol was charged with the loss.

This was Bryan Morris' fourth straight start in which he did not allow an earned run. That gives him 26 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Morris's ERA stands at 0.66 -- 3 earned runs over 40.2 innings.

Three HIts for Marauders, Power, and Harrison

Three hits were the common theme in these minor league games on Monday:

Palm Beach Cardinals 1, Bradenton Marauders 0 (box)

The Marauders were held to just 3 hits in this shut-out on Monday night in Palm Beach. CF Robbie Grossman, DH Starling Marte, and C Tony Sanchez were the only batters to get a hit, and all three hits were singles. Grossman and Sanchez also walked in the game, and Marte was hit by a pitch.

Two of those base runners came in the top of the first. With two outs, Marte was hit by a pitch, and stole second base, then Sanchez walked. A wild pitch put the runners on second and third bases, but they were left there when LF Quincy Latimore struck out to end the inning. The next 14 Bradenton batters were retired in order, until Grossman singled in the 6th. Grossman was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Marte and Sanchez led off the 7th inning with back-to-back singles, but Marte was picked off and caught stealing, and Sanchez was left on base after two ground outs. Grossman also walked in the 9th inning, and went to second base on a balk, but was again left stranded.

In a sad twist, Bradenton starter Nate Adcock also gave up only 3 hits in his 7 innings of work. It was his longest start of the season -- his first four starts were all 5 innings in length. Adcock struck out a season-high 8 batters (he's struck out 7 batters twice) and did not allow any walks. Unfortunately, one of the hits was a solo home run by Palm Beach's RF Alex Castellanos to lead off the 3rd inning. That was the only run of the game, making Adcock the hard-luck loser. Adcock gave up a single to begin the 2nd inning, but got a pop-out double play to erase the runner. Castellanos also singled with two outs in the 5th, and he was Palm Beach's only runner left on base.

Casey Erickson relieved Adcock to pitch the 8th. He also gave up a two-out single, but that runner was caught stealing second base to end the inning.

Wins for Hughes and Morris, Moskos’ 5th Save

Altoona Curve 7, Harrisburg Senators 4 (box)

The Curve staged two late-inning rallies to surpass the Senators' late-inning rally, to begin this 3-game series with a win. Altoona began the game by threatening in the top of the 1st. SS Chase d'Arnaud led off with a single, but was erased when CF Gorkys Hernandez bouncedinto a double play. 3B Jordy Mercer reached base on a throwing error, and 1B Matt Hague singled, but both were left on base when a ground out by 2B Josh Harrison ended the inning. The Curve did get onto the scoreboard in the 2nd inning. RF Miles Durham was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but was forced out at second base on LF Alex Presley's grounder. Presley was safe at first, and he moved on to third base when starting pitcher Jared Hughes doubled. D'Arnaud brought both Presley and Hughes in with a triple into center field.

Hughes gave up a double to the first batter in the bottom of the inning, and a bunt moved that runner to third base. After a walk, a tapper back to the mound got the lead runner trapped in a run-down on the third base line and tagged out. But the next batter doubled, and one run scored. Hughes gave up a single in each of the 3rd and 4th innings, but kept those runners from scoring. He then retired the side in both the 5th and 6th innings. Hughes left the game with the lead, allowing one run on 4 hits and 5 strikeouts over 6 innings.

The Curve were not scoring either in the middle innings. Harrisburg starter Aaron Thompson retired 11 Curve batters in order from the end of the 2nd into the 6th inning. Matt Hague reached base on an error in the 6th, and Josh Harrison followed with a single, but they were both left stranded, as was D'Arnaud who walked in the 7th. The scoring picked up again in the 8th. With two outs, three consecutive hits brought in 3 runs: a single by Harrison, a triple by Durham, and a 2-run homer by Alex Presley. It was Presley's second home run in 10 days -- half already the number he hit in 2009.

Dustin Molleken relieved Jared Hughes to begin the 7th, and he gave up a single to Harrisburg's 1B Chris Marrero -- but Gorkys Hernandez fired a perfect throw in from center field to Chase d'Arnaud covering second and Marrero was out trying to stretch it into a double. In the 8th, Molleken gave up one run on a walk, a single complicated by a throwing error by Miles Durham, and an RBI grounder. Then a 2-run homer gave Harrisburg 3 runs in the inning, matching the Curve. Jordy Mercer kept the Curve well ahead, though, with his own 2-run homer in the 9th, also bringing in Hernandez, who had singled.

Danny Moskos relieved Molleken after the homer in the 8th, and he finished the inning with a walk and two strikeouts. He gave up a single and hit a batter in the 9th, but held on to earn his 5th Save of the season. Hughes took the win, his 4th of the season.
