Columbus Clippers 6, Indianapolis Indians 1 (box)

IMG_3839The Clippers pounded out 12 hits, with each member of their line-up reaching base at least once, while their pitching staff held the Indians' batters to 3 hits at Victory Field tonight.

Starter Jeremy Powell, back in the Indians' starting rotation again, struck out the first batter he faced, CF Michael Brantley. The next three batters reached base: a single slipped past SS Doug Bernier by Clippers' 2B Josh Rodriguez, a walk to DH Luis Valbuena, and a single through the hole into left field by 3B Jared Goedert. Goedert's hit drove in Rodriguez from second base for the Clippers' first run. Powell got a second out when LF Jordan Brown hit a high pop fly, caught by Tribe 3B Akinori Iwamura on the infield fly rule (photo). Then 1B Wes Hodges drove a long fly ball to center field. CF Alex Presley, who had been playing a little shallow, turned and raced for the wall, and tried for the catch over his shoulder. He got his glove on the ball at the warning track, but the ball popped into and out of his glove. Instead of out #3, Hodges had a double, and had driving in two more runs. (photos below)

Jakubauskas Starts In Bradenton, Welker’s Save #5

Sunday action in the Pirates' minor league organization.... the GCL Pirates had the day off, and all of the rest of the affiliates won their games.

Bradenton Marauders 7, Fort Myers Miracle 6 (box)

IMG_2353Chris Jakubauskas (photo) made the start for the Marauders, going into the 5th inning and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, with 3 strikeouts. Jakubauskas worked his way out of trouble in each of the first three innings. He gave up back-to-back hits to begin the game, but got out of the 1st inning with a line out and a double play. Two more runners got on in the 2nd, on a single and a fielding error, but Jakubauskas worked around them to keep the Miracle from scoring. Two more singles and another error in the 3rd again had Jakubauskas in a jam, but a runner caught stealing and a fielder's choice out got him out of it again. Finally, in the 4th, Jakubauskas could not escape -- a double and a single drove in Fort Myers' first run. Jakubauskas began the 5th with an out, then two walks, and that was the end of his afternoon. Tom Boleska relieved him, but threw a wild pitch, then gave up a single and a sacrifice fly to bring in those two runners, both runs charged to Jakubauskas.

Nate Adcock pitched the next 3 innings for the Marauders. Adcock surrendered another 2 runs, on a walk, a double, an RBI single, and an RBI ground out in the 6th inning. Adcock kept the Miracle from scoring in the 7th and the 8th, but the Marauders entered the bottom of the 8th behind by a score of 5-0.

The Marauders had gone down in order in the first three innings of the game. They had one runner on base in each of the next two innings -- a single by 2B Jose De Los Santos in the 4th, a single by 3B Adam Davis in the 5th. Two batters reached base in the 6th, when De Los Santos got to first on an error and C Eric Fryer walked. None of them could come around to score.

Then, in the bottom of the 8th, it was the Marauders who found the miracle. With one out, De Los Santos doiubled, RF Robbie Grossman singled, and Fryer also doubled, and the score was 5-2. After a pitching change, LF Quincy Latimore walked, and DH Calvin Anderson singled, to load the bases. CF Austin McClune doubled, driving in both Grossman and Latimore, and a passed ball allowed Anderson to score, tying the game at 5-5.

Noah Krol took the mound in relief of Adcock to begin the 9th inning. He was greeted by a solo home run, which gave Fort Myers a 6-5 lead. Krol gave up a triple also, but left that runner stranded.

SS Adenson Chourio led off the bottom of the 9th with a single to second base. De Los Santos sacrifice bunted him to second base, and Grossman walked. Fryer tied the game again with a single into right field, as Chourio raced around from second base. Then Calvin Anderson won the game with a walk-off single, scoring Grossman for a 7-6 win.

Jakubauskas Makes Rehab Start; Sanchez’s Jaw Broken

Tuesday's action in the Pirates' lower minor league organization

GCL Yankees 11, GCL Pirates 4 (box)

Chris Jakubauskas, who suffered a concussion while pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates back in April, made his first appearance in a real game today, with the GCL Pirates. He pitched 3 innings, and suffered the loss as he gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and a walk. He did strike out 5 batters. Jakubauskas retired the Yankees in order in the 1st inning, then gave up a run on a triple and a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. He allowed a lone walk in the 3rd inning, but began the 4th with a single, a double, and a 3-run homer, followed by another single.

Joan Montero finished the 4th for Jakubauskas, then gave up a run on a single, a wild pitch, and four walks in the 5th. Dovydas Neverauskas completed the 5th, and gave up 2 runs in the 6th, ona double, a walk, and a 2-RBI single. The Yankees scored 4 runs in the 8th, though only one was earned. The inning began with a throwing error b 2B Luis Solano, then a double and a single both brought in a run. Another fielding error and two more singles gave the Yankees a total of 11 runs. Rinku Singh pitched a scoreless 9th inning for the Pirates, allowing a single and a walk, then getting a line-out into a double play before ending the inning with a strikeout.

The Pirates' bats could not keep up with the Yankees. They scored one run in the 2nd, when C Elias Diaz led off with a double, was sacrifice bunted to third, and scored on a fielder's choice by Solano. The Pirates added a run in the 4th. RF Gregory Polanco led off with a single up the middle. A grounder by LF Exicardo Cayonez forced Polanco out at second but left Cayonez at first. Cayonez stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Yankees' catcher. He scored on a wild pitch. Another error contributed to the Pirates' run in the 6th. SS Kevin Mort singled and 3B Eric Avila and Diaz both walked. The fielding error on Solano's ball to short allowed Mort to score. Polanco scored the Pirates' final run in the 8th, when he doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on Cayonez's RBI single.

You’ll Be Dizzy, But Jakubauskas Isn’t

Pirates' pitcher Chris Jakubauskas was released from the hospital in Houston this morning. The diagnosis is a concussion, but's he's ok. He's probably got an amazing headache, but isn't dizzy....

... You'll be dizzy, though, with all of the roster moves resulting from Jakubauskas going onto the 15-day disabled list.

Pitcher Brian Burres was recalled from Indianapolis. He could make a start for the Pirates

Pitcher Brian Bass is being called up from Indy and placed onto the Pirates' 40-man roster. He can also start if needed.

To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Brandon Jones has been Designated For Assignment. He will have to pass through waivers, and if he does, then the Pirates could sign him to a minor league contract.

PitcherDaniel McCutchen was optioned back to Indianapolis. This time, McCutchen will really report to Indy. He'll be able to take Jakubauskas's spot in the Indy rotation, which got a bit of a break because of Saturday's rain out.

That still leaves a spot open on the Pirates' roster, but it's likely that Jeff Karstens will be called up to make the start on Tuesday.

And there's rain and thunderstorms predicted for Louisville this afternoon and evening, so the Indians and the Bats may not get to play today either.

Rain-Out In Indy; Van Every Traded to Boston

The rain that had been threatening in Indianapolis all afternoon finally started around 5 pm, and by 7 pm was coming down in earnest. The game between the Indianapolis Indians and the Louisville Bats was postponed, and will be played on July 5th as part of a double-header. This game was to have been the final game of this home stand. The Tribe will head down I-65 to Louisville for two games, then will go east for 4 games in Pawtucket and 4 games in Lehigh Valley.

IMG_2602In other news -- SS Argenis Diaz was optioned back to the Indians, and was in tonight's starting lineup, at least until the game got called.

P Chris Jakubauskas gotthe nod for the Pirates tonight in Houston, but his start was cut short. Jakubauskas had given up a lead-off single to Michael Bourne, then got two outs. Then Astros 1B Lance Berkman took a 1-0 pitch right back at the mound, hitting Jakubauskas on the back of the head. Jakubauskas was able to walk a few steps to the cart that took him off the field, and was taken to a Houston hospital to stay overnight for further evaluation.

OF Jonathan Van Every (photo) was traded to the Boston Red Sox today, for a player to be named later. The Red Sox needed some outfield help, and Van Every will be joining the major league team. He had appeared in 10 games for the Indians, and was hitting .314 (11-for-35), with 2 doubles, 2 homers, and 4 RBI. Van Every had been in the Red Sox organization in 2008 and 2009, playing for AAA Pawtucket for most of that time. He played in a total of 18 games for the major league team over those two years, hitting .286 (8-for-26) with a triple, a homer, and 8 RBI. update: Van Every got into Boston's game tonight as a late-inning defensive replacement in center field. He struck out in his only plate appearance.

Former Indy Indian and Pittsburgh Pirate Brian Bixler homered twice for Columbus in the Clippers 7-1 win over Toledo tonight. The homer in the 4th was for 2 runs, and the one in the 8th was a solo blast.

Walker and Kratz Supply All The Runs The Indians Need

Indianapolis Indians 6, Louisville Bats 1 (box)

IMG_26592B Neil Walker and C Erik Kratz provided the in-game fireworks, which went along nicely with the post-game fireworks at Victory Field on Friday night. Walker went 2-for-4 with a single and a double, and gave the Tribe 4 RBI, while Kratz hit a 2-run homer to account for the remaining Indians' runs. Kevin Hart (photo) made the start for the Indians and earned his first win of the season.

Bats' starter Justin Lehr got through the first inning rather easily, walking 3B Pedro Alvarez but striking out two batters. In the 2nd inning, Lehr gave up a one-out single to RF Brandon Moss. Kratz followed with a line drive that just cleared the left field wall, to land in a collection of kids on the grassy berm. Indians 2, Bats 0.

Lehr got into trouble right away in the 3rd inning. LF Jose Tabata (photo below) led off with a single lined into center field. CF Jonathan Van Every grounded a single into right field, moving Tabata to second base. Lehr got a little help from his catcher, Corky Miller, who caught Tabata with a big lead off second base, and fired across the diamond to pick him off the base.

IMG_2667Pedro Alvarez was next to reach base, when his grounder to short kicked off the glove of SS Zack Cozart. 1B Steve Pearce loaded the bases when he worked a walk. That brought up Neil Walker. Walker took the first pitch down the first base line and into the right field corner, to clear the bases and give the Indians a 5-0 lead. Pearce came all the way around from first base to score, drawing the throw from RF Wladimir Balantien. The throw to home was wide and Pearce was in easily, but C Corky Miller alertly relayed the throw to third base, where Walker had headed on the throw in from the outfield. Miller's throw was on time, and Walker was tagged out at third.

Lehr got out of a jam in the 4th inning. Erik Kratz led off with a walk, and SS Brian Friday slipped a single through the hole and into left field. Kevin Hart was batting for the first time this season in tonight's game, and he had grounded to first in the 2nd inning. Now in the 4th, with runners on first and second with no outs, it was time for a sacrifice. Hart fouled off two bunt attempts, but on his third try, he dropped down a bunt that was a little too hard. The ball landed to the left of the mound, within easy reach for Lehr. Lehr fielded, whirled, and threw to third base, where Kratz was forced out. Tabata still had two runners on for him, and he lined a single into left field. Friday rounded third and headed for the plate, but the throw from LF Juan Francisco reached Corky Miller just a second before Friday. Miller reached across the plate to tag Friday for the second out. A strikeout ended the threat.

Pearce Homers But Mud Hens Slip Past Tribe

Toledo Mud Hens 3, Indianapolis Indians 2 (box)

IMG_2372C Luke Carlin went 3-for-4 and 1B Steve Pearce hit a huge solo home run, but the Indians' offensive burst came too late, as the Mud Hens beat the Tribe at Victory Field tonight.

The Indians could not muster much of an offense for the first 5 innings, as only four batters reached base. The Indians also were making a habit of leaving runners stranded at third base, which is never a good idea. 1B Steve Pearce had the first Tribe hit in the 2nd inning, a very long shot to the wall at the 418' mark in left center field -- the deepest part of Victory Field. The ball dropped right into the pocket way way out there, and Pearce rounded second and charged for third, sliding in just before the throw with a triple (photo). Two strikeouts ended the inning, though, with Pearce still standing there at third.

Luke Carlin was the one left on third in the 3rd inning. He led off with a single into left field, and moved to second base when SS Argenis Diaz dropped down a sacrifice bunt just in front of the plate. Carlin stole third base, drawing no throw from the Mud Hens' catcher. RF Brandon Jones walked, but a strikeout and a pop up to first base ended that inning.

IMG_2353Indians' starter Chris Jakubauskas (photo) was also using strikeouts to get himself out of jams in the first few innings of the game. Toledo DH Will Rhymes opened the game with a little looping hit that dropped in just barely fair behind the third base bag. Strikeouts of SS Brent Dlugach and RF Brennan Boesch put Jakubauskas into a much better position, and after a walk, he got CF Casper Wells to ground to third base to end the inning. Jakubauskas retired the side in the 2nd inning, including 2 more strikeouts. He gave up a one-out walk in the third, but again two strikeouts ended the inning. Jakubauskas was not able to utilize the strikeout in the 4th inning, and that's when he got into trouble. 1B Jeff Larish walked, and after a fly out, LF Jeff Frazier smacked a double off the upper half of the new scoreboard in left field, moving Larish to third. 2B Max Leon zapped a liner right back to the mound, where Jakubauskas was able to stick his glove up and knock the ball down. He quickly picked the ball up, turned to glare over towards third and then towards second, to keep those base runners from moving, then fired over to first base to get the out on Leon. The next batter, C Mike Rabelo, brought both runners in with a double to the wall in the right-center alley, giving the Mud Hens a 2-0 lead.

Clippers Sink Indians With 6-Run 7th

Columbus Clippers 9, Indianapolis Indians 4 (box)

Six runs in the 7th inning gave the Clippers the win over the Indianapolis Indians this afternoon at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, as the two teams split the 4-game series.

img_9326pearceTribe starter Chris Jakubauskas made only one big mistake over his first four innings. In the bottom of the 1st, he gave up a very long home run to Columbus DH Carlos Santana, who now leads the International League with 4 home runs and 8 RBI. Jakubauskas gave up a walk and a single in the 2nd inning, but former Indy Indian Brian Bixler bounced into a double play to end the inning. Neil Walker, who was playing second base for the first time in a regular season game, handled the hopper neatly to start the double play. Another ground out ended the inning and stranded a runner on third.

The Indians took the lead in the top of the 4th. With one out, 1B Steve Pearce (photo) just missed a home run when he smashed a ball off the top of the left field wall. Columbus LF Trevor Crowe picked up the ball on the rebound, but must have assumed that Pearce was going to stop at second base, because he held onto the ball for a few seconds before throwing it in. Pearce made the turn at second and just kept going, sliding head-first into third base just before the throw. Neil Walker followed with a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Pearce. Walker stole second base, and though he did not beat the throw from Columbus catcher Damaso Espino, SS Anderson Hernandez dropped the ball in front of the bag, and Walker was safe. That put Walker into scoring position, and it made a difference moments later. C Luke Carlin lined a single in to right field, and Walker was able to score from second base to give the Indians a 2-1 lead.

Prospect Watching: Chris Jakubauskas and Kevin Hart

OK, maybe these two are not exactly prospects, and we should be saying "Indians Watching", since these two hurlers will be starting 2010 with the Indianapolis Indians.

Chris Jakubauskas is a 31-year-old righty who came to the Pirates' organization when he was claimed off waivers from the Mariners back in November. The California native was a first baseman in college and went undrafted. After several years in independent ball as a pitcher, Jakubauskas was picked up by the Mariners, and quickly advanced in their organization mostly in a relief role. He made just one appearance at the AAA level in 2009, and spent the rest of the season in Seattle. Between 8 spot-starts and 27 relief appearances, Jakubauskas posted a 6-7 record and a 5.32 ERA. He pitched 93 innings for the Mariners and allowed 91 hits, 55 earned runs, and 27 walks, with 47 strikeouts. He clearly gets a lot of contact on his pitches, and gets a lot of fly balls. Unfortunately in 2009, 15 of those fly balls made it over the fences for homers. Left-handed batters did better against him than right-handed batters. Jakubauskas is on the Pirates' 40-man roster, since he was taken off waivers. He made 6 Grapefruit League appearances in spring training with the Pirates. In a total of 6 innings, he allowed 6 runs on 9 hits. Those runs came in two games -- 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 1.2 innings on March 7th, then 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk in 0.1 inning on March 13th. On March 23rd, Jakubauskas was optioned to AAA Indianapolis (this is his last option year left). He will probably work in long relief for the Indians, and pick up some spot starts along the way. He needs to work on allowing fewer hits and fewer gopher balls.

Losses for Indians and Pirates

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 4, Indianapolis Indians 3

The Indians' last-chance rally fell short this afternoon in Tampa, as the Indians lost to the Yankees for the second day in a row. It was the Indians' 5th straight spring training loss. Tribe starter Chris Jakubauskas pitched 2 innings and allowed one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out 3 batters. Kyle Bloom also took the mound for the Indians, and he suffered the loss as he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in his two innings.

CF Jose Tabata got the Indians going with an RBI double in the 6th inning. SS Brian Friday added a solo home run in the 8th. The Indians entered the top of the 9th behind 4-2. With two outs, 1B Brian Myrow, CF Jon Van Every, and LF Neil Walker hit consecutive singles, as Walker picked up the RBI. But the Indians left Van Every and Walker stranded as a strikeout ended the inning and the game.

Blue Jays 11, Pirates 2 (box)

Three strikes against the Pirates today:

1. Pirates' batters were able to get only 5 hits. Two of those were by CF Andrew McCutchen, and 2B Aki Iwamura, RF Garrett Jones, and starter Daniel McCutchen each had one.

2. Pirates' pitchers gave up 14 hits. Daniel McCutchen went 4 innings and gave up 5 of those hits for 5 runs, though only 2 runs were earned. Brandon Donnelly lasted only 0.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits. Anthony Claggett gave up 2 unearned runs and 3 hits, and Jeff Karstens was responsible for one run on 2 hits. Evan Meek pitched a scoreless inning (but gave up a hit) and Steven Jackson retired the only batter he faced.

3. Pirates' fielders made 4 errors, which explains all those unearned runs. SS Ronny Cedeno made fielding errors on back-to-back plays in the 2nd inning, Garrett Jones made a fielding error in the outfield, and 3B Jeremy Farrell, up from minor league camp, made a throwing error.

Also in the game today: CF John Raynor, 2B Doug Bernier, RF Steve Pearce, C Erik Kratz, LF Austin McClune, 1B Calvin Anderson.

Hart, Walker To Indianapolis

The Pirates made more roster moves this morning. Righty starter Kevin Hart was optioned to AAA Indianapolis. Pirates' management points out that, because of the scheduling vagarities, there will be only one time in the first 3 weeks of the season when a 5th starter is going to be needed. With Hart in Indianapolis, he will have the opportunity to make a few starts during those 3 weeks.

Also optioned to Indianapolis: 3B Neil Walker and reliever Chris Jakubauskas.

INF/OF Brian Myrow, C/INF Hector Gimenez, and relievers Jean Machi, Wil Ledezma, and Brian Burres were all reassigned to minor league camp. All five were signed as free agents. Myrow and Gimenez both played for Indianapolis last season and with their minor league contracts were expected to return to Indy for 2010. Machi pitched at AA and AAA in 2009. All three relievers had an outside chance of making the major league bullpen.
