Roster Moves and Winter Leagues: Rough Night For Morton And Hamman

A few roster moves by the Pirates today:

Several players have been removed from the 40-man roster and outrighted to AAA Indianapolis: LHP Justin Thomas, RHP Sean Gallagher, RHP Steven Jackson, 1B Jeff Clement, and OF Brandon Moss.

Of these, Thomas, Jackson, and Moss are now all free to declare themselves minor league free agents. Clement does not have enough service time to get to be a free agent, so he's "stuck" on the Indianapolis roster. He's had knee surgery, and hopes to be ready by spring training. Gallagher does have the service time, but the Pirates are probably negotiating with him to try to keep him.

LHP Wil Ledezma has signed a one-year contract with the Pirates for 2011.

RHP Jose Ascanio and 1B Steve Pearce (who has also had knee issues) are officially off the DL and back on the 40-man roster. RHP Ross Ohlendorf also falls into this category.

On to Wednesday's winter league action, with Pirates' players and friends:

Bravos de Margarita 6, Cardenales de Lara 4 -- "Only" 22 hits in this game. One belonged to 3B Andy LaRoche, who homered to lead off the 2nd inning and start Los Bravos' scoring. Three singles and a double added two more runs for Margarita in the 2nd. Two singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly gave them another run in the 4th. LaRoche was intentionally walked in the 7th inning, when Margarita scored twice more. Lara scored one run in each of four innings. Justin Thomas took the mound in relief for Los Bravos in the 6th, with two Cardenales on base and two outs. He gave up an RBI single, though that run was charged to the previous pitcher. Thomas started the 7th inning with a strikeout, then a hit batter and a single. He was relieved, but an RBI grounder brought in the first runner, and this run was charged to Thomas.

Hamman Earns A Save In Venezuela

A busy Sunday afternoon and evening in the winter leagues... the Arizona Fall League has the day off on Sundays.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Navegantes del Magallanes 2, Caribes de Anzoategui 0 -- Corey Hamman earned his first save of the winter season for Magallanes. Hamman entered the game in the top of the 8th, with pinch-runner Adenson Chourio on first and no outs. He got a ground out to first to end the inning, then came back out in the 9th, w hen he worked around a lead-off walk for a scoreless inning. Los Caribes were held to just 4 hits in the game, and Los Navegantes did not hit much better -- only 5 hits. Magallanes scored one run in the top of the 1st on a walk, a ground out by DH Mike Ryan which moved the runner over, and an RBI single. A walk and a double brought in the run in the 5th. Ryan also singled in the 8th, but was left on base.

Leones del Caracas 14, Tiburones de La Guaira 5 -- The Sharks were clawed up by the Tigers this afternoon, as every member of the Caracas lineup had at least one hit. La Guaira scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning, but Caracas scored in each of the last 5 innings, including 4-run innings in the 8th and 9th. C Carlos Maldonado singled in the 2nd inning, but did not factor into any of the late scoring.

Bravos de Margarita 5, Aguilas de Zulia 0 -- Los Bravos did all their scoring in the 7th (3 runs) and 8th (2 runs), and held Los Aguilas' hitters to just 5 hits. Andy LaRoche did not get into the game.

Tigres de Aragua 5, Cardinales de Lara 3 -- DH Raul Chavez, C Miguel Perez, and pinch-hitter Hector Gimenez all went hitless in the game, but Chavez was hit by a pitch and scored in the 2-run 1st inning for Aragua. A walk and four singles gave Los Tigres 3 more runs in the 3rd. Lara also had a walk and four singles, plus an Aragua throwing error, in the top of the 5th, when they also scored 3 runs.

Curve Shut Out Trenton, Take Advantage In Series

Altoona Curve 5, Trenton Thunder 0 ... (box)

The Curve took advantage of the unexpected day off yesterday, and came back to action ready to roll. Three Curve pitchers combined to shut out the Thunder in Trenton, as the Curve took a 2-games-to-one lead in the 5-game Eastern League Championship Series.

Justin Wilson made the start for the Curve, pitching 7 innings and allowing only 5 hits and a walk, with 3 strikeouts. Wilson had to work around at least one runner on base in every inning but one, as he scattered the hits and the walk, and also had a batter reach third base on a fielding error by Anthony Norman in right field. The Thunder put two runners on base in the 3rd inning, when Wilson got two outs, then gave up a single and a walk. That was the closest the Thunder came to hurting Wilson, though, and he calmly got a fly out to end the inning. Wilson was also able to take advantage of timely double plays to erase base runners in the 6th and 7th innings. He earned his second post-season win, and increased his total of post-season scoreless innings to 13.

LF Andrew Lambo was the first to provide Wilson with some run support, when he blasted a solo home run, rising over the left-center field wall in the 2nd inning.

The Curve batters were quiet for the next two innings, until DH Jim Negrych walked to start a two-out rally in the 5th. A passed ball put Negrych on second base, and CF Jose De Los Santos singled to second base, moving Negrych to third. Norman slipped a grounder just out of the reach of the Trenton second baseman, scoring Negrych. 2B Chase d'Arnaud was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. That gave 3B Josh Harrison the opportunity to drive another single into right field, bringing in both De Los Santos and Norman, and the Curve had a 4-0 lead.

Wilson Dominates As Curve Take Game 3

Altoona Curve 7, Harrisburg Senators 2 ... (box)

The Pirates' only minor league affiliate still playing in the post-season, the Altoona Curve, defeated the Harrisburg Senators 7-2 in the third game of the Eastern League Western Division playoffs tonight in Harrisburg. After splitting the first two games in Altoona, the Curve now have a 2-1 game lead in the best-of-5.

The Curve pitching was a big key in the game, as starter Justin Wilson dominated the Senators for 6 scoreless innings. He allowed only two hits and struck out 7 Harrisburg batters, though he also walked 5. The first two batters in the Harrisburg line-up, 2B Steve Lombardozzi and SS Josh Johnson, led off in four different innings, and each time at least one got on base. Lombardozzi had both of the singles given up by Wilson. In the bottom of the 1st, Lombardozzi led off with a single and Johnson walked. Wilson got a line out and a strikeout, then walked another batter to load the bases, but then ended the inning with a fly out.

Wilson retired the side in order in the 2nd, then the same two came up again to begin the 3rd. This time Lombardozzi grounded out, then Johnson walked again. Wilson got a double play to erase Johnson at second base, ending the inning. Another walk and another double play got Wilson through the 4th inning, and he retired the side in order in the 5th. The 1-2 punch began the 6th inning with another single by Lombardozzi (only Wilson's second hit allowed) and a third walk to Johnson. This time Lombardozzi advanced to third base by tagging up on a fly out, but two strikeouts ended the inning.

Mike Colla relieved Wilson to begin the 7th inning. He worked around a single in that inning, then had to face guess who to lead off the 8th inning. This time they turned it around -- Colla walked Lombardozzi and gave up a single to Johnson. Colla wasn't any more impressed than Wilson had been. He left them standing right there, with a strikeout and two short fly outs.

Meanwhile, the Curve batters were busy scoring. They posted a total of 12 hits, with five different batters collecting 2 hits each: 2B Chase d'Arnaud, 3B Josh Harrison, 1B Matt Hague, lF Jim Negrych, and RF Miles Durham. The Curve threatened in the 2nd, when Hague led off with a line drive single into right field. He was erased with a double play, then C Hector Gimenez and Negrych worked back-to-back walks. They were both left on base when a fly out ended the inning. Three consecutive singles got another rally going in the 3rd inning. D'Arnaud and Harrison both grounded through the left side of the infield, and SS Jordy Mercer lined the third single into right field. That brought up Hague, who rocketed a long ball off the top of the wall in center field, not missing a home run by much. It fell in for a double, clearing the bases to give Altoona a 3-0 lead.

Curve and Marauders Both Fall To Big Innings

Harrisburg Senators 10, Altoona Curve 5 .... (box)

Two 5-run innings gave the Senators the advantage over the Curve in the first game of their Eastern League playoff series.

The Curve jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the 1st. 2B Chase d'Arnaud led off with a walk, and 3B Josh Harrison followed by blasting a home run over the left-center field wall, to give the Curve a 2-0 lead before they even had recorded an out. Two outs later, LF Andrew Lambo reached base on a fielding error by the Senators' 2B Steve Lombardozzi. C Hector Gimenez worked a walk, and RF Miles Durham singled into left field to bring in Lambo from second base, and the Curve had a 3-0 lead.

It didn't last long, as the Senators sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. Curve starter Rudy Owens had worked around a walk to Lombardozzi in the 1st inning, but got into trouble quickly in the 2nd. A walk and a single began the inning, then a grounder to the diving 1B Matt Hague produced a force out at second base. A double into right-center field brought in both base runners, and the Senators had made it a one-run game, 3-2. A bunt attempt by the Senators' pitcher, Tom Milone, went right to Owens on the mound, and he turned it into a fielder's choice out at third, leaving Milone on first base. But Lombardozzi walked again, then a single loaded the bases. Owens had two outs with those bases loaded, and he got an 0-2 on the next batter -- and another single drove in two more runs, and the Senators had the lead. That sent Owens to the showers after just 1.2 innings. Jared Hughes came out of the bullpen, and he loaded the bases again by walking the first batter he faced. A passed ball by Gimenez allowed the runner in from third base (unearned run, charged to Owens), and when a ground out ended the inning, the Senators had a 5-3 lead.

Milone had the Curve bats under control for the next 6 innings. D'Arnaud doubled in the 2nd inning, but was left on base when three other Curve batters struck out. Hughes reached base in the 4th on a fielding error, but was also left stranded. Durham singled in the 6th, but was also left on base. Harrisburg's reliever Hassan Pena pitched the 7th inning, and he also retired the Curve in order.

Hughes did even better than Milone over his next 3 innings -- he retired those 9 Harrisburg batters in order. Bryan Morris was next out of the bullpen. He retired the side in order in the 6th, and worked his way out of a jam in the 7th. That inning began with a single, then Lombardozzi reached on fielding error, when his grounder bounced off 3B Harrison's glove. With two on and none out (instead of one on and one out), Morris got a strikeout. Another single loaded the bases, then Morris ended the inning with a three-pitch strikeout and a blazing line drive that went straight to Harrison's glove.

Mike Dubee took the mound for the Curve to begin the 8th inning, and he found trouble quickly. Back-to-back singles opened the inning, then Dubee got a strikeout. An RBI single followed, then Lombardozzi drove a liner down the right field line and into the bullpen, plating the second run of the inning. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and a grounder to third yielded a force out at third, but Harrison's throw to first rolled away from 1B Hague, and instead of an inning-ending double play, two more runs scored and the inning continued. Another single dropped in, in short left field, to drive in the fifth run of the inning. Craig Hansen relieved Dubee, and he got the pitcher Pena to fly out to end the inning.

Marauders Clinch Playoff Spot

On Friday night, all of the Pirates' minor league affiliates lost. On Saturday night, all but State College won....

Bradenton Marauders 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 2 ... (box)

The Marauders assured themselves at least a spot in the playoffs with this win tonight. Nate Adcock won his 11th game of the season with 2 runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work. He gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st, with a 2-out walk, a wild pitch, and two singles. He surrendered another run on a walk and a double to lead off the 3rd inning. He scattered 4 more hits, but left two stranded and erased two with double plays. In the top of the 6th, Adcock got two outs and gave up a single, then that runner stole both second and third base. He was relieved by Kyle McPherson, who finished that inning with a strikeout, then gave up just one hit over the next 2 innings, including 3 more strikeouts. Noah Krol earned his league-leading 34th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning, working around a missed catch error.

Bradenton picked up one run in the 2nd inning, when C Eric Fryer singled, then moved to second base on a groundout. 3B Adam Davis' RBI single brought in Fryer. The Marauders were on the receiving end of several walks over the next few innings -- one in the 3rd to SS Shelby Ford, one in the 4th to Fryer, three in the 5th to DH Jordan Newton, 2B James Skelton, and RF Robbie Grossman to load the bases -- but all were left on base. They did score again in the 6th, when LF Quincy Latimore led off with a single. He was forced out at second on Fryer's grounder, leaving Fryer at first. Davis singled again, advancing Fryer to third bse, then Newton doubled in both Fryer and Davis, to take a 3-2 lead. They added an insurance run in the 4th. Grossman singled with one out, then scored on CF Starling Marte's double. The Marauders threatened again in the 8th, as Davis was hit by a pitch and Newton walked, then Skelton bunted them both into scoring position. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning, but it turned out to not matter, and the Marauders season is going to continue beyond the weekend.

Gonzalezes Power Up With Homers

The West Virginia Power had their last late-morning game of the season today. The rest of the Pirates' lower minor affiliates play this evening.

West Virginia Power 12, Rome Braves 4 ... (box)

The Power hammered away at the Braves, scoring in every inning after the 1st, doubling up the Braves in hits. Jarek Cunningham and LF Rogelios Noris led the way with 3 hits each. 2B Rome got off to a good start with a solo home run to begin the 2nd inning. The Power came right back in the bottom of the inning, when 1B Aaron Baker walked and scored on RF Jose Hernandez's double off the right field wall. A ground out pushed Hernandez to third base, and he scored on Noris' line drive single inot left field. 3B Elevys Gonzalez added another run with a lead-off homer on the first pitch of the 3rd inning (his 4th of the season). Noris crushed a ball off the top of the left field wall with one out in the 4th inning, cruising into third base for a stand-up triple. He scored moments later on SS Benji Gonzalez's first home run of the season.

Power starter Brett Lorin had allowed that homer in the 2nd, and gave up singles in the 1st and 3rd, plus two walks in the 4th. The Braves got to him in the top of the 5th, though. With two outs, Lorin hit a batter, then gave up a double and a 3-run homer. That brought Rome within one run of the Power, 5-4. But that was all the scoring the Power pitchers intended to let the Braves do. Maurice Bankston relieved Lorin to pitch 2 scoreless innings, allowing only a single in the 7th. Jhonathan Ramos, just promoted from State College, celebrated his return to the Power with two perfect innings, including 3 strikeouts.

The Power added some insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Jarek Cunningham led off with a single, and he advanced to second base on a wild pitch. CF Evan Chambers walked, then when the Braves changed pitchers, Cunningham and Chambers greeted the new hurler by pulling off a double steal. Hernandez lined a single into right field, scoring Cunningham, and C Ramon Cabrera's sacrifice fly brought in Chambers. Noris lined into center field, and when Hernandez tried to make it to third base, the throw in from the outfield got past the Rome third baseman. Hernandez scrambled for the plate, but the third baseman recovered the ball quickly, and Hernandez was out at the plate. Noris was credited with only a single on the play, and the Power had a 7-4 lead.

Three more runs scored in the 6th. Benji Gonzalez singled and stole second base, and Cunningham tripled off the center field wall to bring him in. Chambers walked and also stole second base, then Baker doubled, plating both Cunningham and Chambers. DH Andy Vasquez added a solo home run in the 7th inning. Then the Power loaded the bases in the 8th on a walk to Cunningham, Chambers being hit by a pitch, and a single by Baker. A sacrifice fly by Hernandez brought Cunningham across the plate for the Power's 12th run of the game.

The South Atlantic League announced their post-season All-Star Team today, but no Power players were named to the team.

Mercer Gets 4 Hits And Walk-Off; Cunningham Homers In The 12th

Less action than planned on Tuesday for the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates, mostly due to rain in the Bradenton area. The Marauders' game against the St. Lucie Mets was postponed. They will try for two tomorrow. Yesterday's game between the Fort Myer Miracle and the Marauders was also rained out, as well as the game that they tried to start on Sunday (but only got into the second inning). Those games will not be made up. The GCL Braves at GCL Pirates games were washed out yesterday. They tried to play two today, but only got one of the games in.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Pirates 1 .. (box)

Each team had 6 hits this afternoon, but the one that counted was the Braves' walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 7th. The Pirates began the scoring with a run in the 3rd inning. SS Kevin Mort led off with a double, then advanced to third base on DH Justin Howard's single into right field. The two pulled off a double steal, with Mort scoring on the steal of home. The Braves tied the score in the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run.

The Pirates loaded the bases in the 5th, on singles by Howard and CF Junior Sosa, and a walk by 2B Jorge Bishop. A strikeout ended that threat. Sosa also singled in the 1st inning and stole second base. LF Exicardo Cayonez also singled in the 4th, but was thrown out trying to steal second. 1B Jared Lakind made his pro debut, but went 0-for-3 at the plate.

Joely Rodriguez pitched 5 innings in his start, and scattered 3 hits, no walks. One of those hits was the solo homer in the 4th. Ryan Hafner also made his pro debut, pitching the 6th inning. He gave up a lead-off single in the 6th, then got a grounder force out and struck out the next two batters to end the inning and continue the tie. Hafner began the 7th inning with a single and a walk. Fraylin Campos relieved Hafner, but he hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. That set up Braves' 3B Brandon Drury for the game-winning grand slam.

Gonzalez’s Walk-Off Homer, Krol’s 30th Save

A busy Friday for the Pirates' minor league affiliates:

Bradenton Marauders 5, Jupiter Hammerheads 3 (box)

The Marauders posted 14 hits, with each member of the line-up collecting at least one. C Eric Fryer had a perfect 4-for-4 night, with all four hits singles. SS Greg Picart had 2 singles, and LF Quincy Latimore doubled and homered. They scored only 5 runs on those 14 hits, though, leaving 13 runners on base.

Bradenton began scoring in the 2nd inning, on Fryer's first single and an RBI double by 1B Calvin Anderson. Latimore's double and a single by DH Jeremy Farrell to score Latimore added another run in the 3rd. Latimore's home run over the left field wall made it 3-0 in the 5th inning. The Marauders took advantage of an error by the Hammerheads to score agin in the 6th. With one out, Greg Picart singled and 2B Shelby Ford reached on a fielding error in left field, which let the speedy Picart score from first base. Ford went to third base on the error, and he scored on RF Robbie Grossman's RBI single.

Nate Baker earned his 2nd win with the Marauders, going 6 shutout innings and allowing only 2 hits, with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Three of those walks came in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Baker got out of that bases-loaded jam with a pop out and two fly outs. He had two more runners in scoring position in the 2nd, with a walk and a double, but got out of that jam too. The other single he allowed came with two outs in the 3rd. After that single, Baker retired the next 10 batters he faced, to finish his night.

Craig Hansen came on in relief of Baker to begin the 7th. He kept Jupiter from scoring in the 7th, despite two runners in scoring position from a hit batter, a single, and a wild pitch. The Hammerheads' only runs came in the 8th, and only one of the three runs was earned. A double and two walks loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly brought in the earned run. After a second out, Hansen was relieved by Duke Welker. The first batter Welker faced took a ball into center field, but an error by CF Starling Marte caused two unearned runs to score. Welker finished that inning with a line out to short.

Noah Krol earned his 30th save of the season with a perfect 9th inning. He leads the Florida State League in saves -- #2 has 28 saves and #3 has 21 saves. How many saves do you need to have before you get promoted?
