Curve and Marauders Both Fall To Big Innings

Harrisburg Senators 10, Altoona Curve 5 .... (box)

Two 5-run innings gave the Senators the advantage over the Curve in the first game of their Eastern League playoff series.

The Curve jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the 1st. 2B Chase d'Arnaud led off with a walk, and 3B Josh Harrison followed by blasting a home run over the left-center field wall, to give the Curve a 2-0 lead before they even had recorded an out. Two outs later, LF Andrew Lambo reached base on a fielding error by the Senators' 2B Steve Lombardozzi. C Hector Gimenez worked a walk, and RF Miles Durham singled into left field to bring in Lambo from second base, and the Curve had a 3-0 lead.

It didn't last long, as the Senators sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. Curve starter Rudy Owens had worked around a walk to Lombardozzi in the 1st inning, but got into trouble quickly in the 2nd. A walk and a single began the inning, then a grounder to the diving 1B Matt Hague produced a force out at second base. A double into right-center field brought in both base runners, and the Senators had made it a one-run game, 3-2. A bunt attempt by the Senators' pitcher, Tom Milone, went right to Owens on the mound, and he turned it into a fielder's choice out at third, leaving Milone on first base. But Lombardozzi walked again, then a single loaded the bases. Owens had two outs with those bases loaded, and he got an 0-2 on the next batter -- and another single drove in two more runs, and the Senators had the lead. That sent Owens to the showers after just 1.2 innings. Jared Hughes came out of the bullpen, and he loaded the bases again by walking the first batter he faced. A passed ball by Gimenez allowed the runner in from third base (unearned run, charged to Owens), and when a ground out ended the inning, the Senators had a 5-3 lead.

Milone had the Curve bats under control for the next 6 innings. D'Arnaud doubled in the 2nd inning, but was left on base when three other Curve batters struck out. Hughes reached base in the 4th on a fielding error, but was also left stranded. Durham singled in the 6th, but was also left on base. Harrisburg's reliever Hassan Pena pitched the 7th inning, and he also retired the Curve in order.

Hughes did even better than Milone over his next 3 innings -- he retired those 9 Harrisburg batters in order. Bryan Morris was next out of the bullpen. He retired the side in order in the 6th, and worked his way out of a jam in the 7th. That inning began with a single, then Lombardozzi reached on fielding error, when his grounder bounced off 3B Harrison's glove. With two on and none out (instead of one on and one out), Morris got a strikeout. Another single loaded the bases, then Morris ended the inning with a three-pitch strikeout and a blazing line drive that went straight to Harrison's glove.

Mike Dubee took the mound for the Curve to begin the 8th inning, and he found trouble quickly. Back-to-back singles opened the inning, then Dubee got a strikeout. An RBI single followed, then Lombardozzi drove a liner down the right field line and into the bullpen, plating the second run of the inning. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and a grounder to third yielded a force out at third, but Harrison's throw to first rolled away from 1B Hague, and instead of an inning-ending double play, two more runs scored and the inning continued. Another single dropped in, in short left field, to drive in the fifth run of the inning. Craig Hansen relieved Dubee, and he got the pitcher Pena to fly out to end the inning.

Power Finish With A Win, Curve Save It For The Playoffs

Just two more games on Labor Day... The Marauders have the day off today, then begin the first round of the playoffs tomorrow.

West Virginia Power 7, Hagerstown Suns 3 .... (box)

The Power wrapped up their season with a win over the Suns. Everyone finished the season with hits, as the Power posted 16 hits, and each memeber of the batting order had at least one hit. CF Evan Chambers and SS Elevys Gonzalez had 3 hits each.

The Power threatened in the bottom of the 1st, when RF David Rubinstein led off with a double into left field, and Chambers made it runners on the corners with a single. Chambers stole second base, but both runners were left stranded after a strikeout and a flyout. They did get onto the scoreboard in the 4th inning. With one out, 1B Kyle Morgan walked, and LF Rogelios Noris blasted his 15th homer of the season for 2 runs. After the home run, C Jairo Marquez doubled, and singles by Gonzalez and Rubinstein brought in Marquez, giving the Power a 3-0 lead.

Starter Brett Lorin pitched 4 scoreless innings, allowing only a single and a walk in the 2nd, and a lead-off single in the 4th. He was relieved by Justin Ennis, who retired the side in order in the 5th. Ennis did give up a run in the 6th, on a triple and a single, to cut the Power lead to 3-1. The Power came right back in the bottom of that inning, though, adding 2 runs on 4 singles: by 3B Andy Vasquez, Gonzalez, 2B Jarek Cunningham (RBI), and Chambers (RBI).

With the score at 5-1, neither team scored in the 7th, but both teams added 2 runs in the 8th. Marc Baca took the mound to begin the inning, and he gave up a single, followed by two stolen bases (2nd and 3rd). Then a 2-run homer got the Suns a little closer, 5-3. The Power answered with their two in the bottom of the 8th, with a triple by Marquez and their own 2-run homer, by Gonzalez. Baca retired the Suns in order in the 9th, ending the game and the season.

Pitchers Gabriel Alvarado and Phillip Irwin were both promoted to the A+ Marauders, where they will assist in the Marauders' playoff run.

The Power finished the first half of the season in 7th (last) place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division, 11 games back, with a 31-39 record. They did better in the second half, finishing tied for 3rd and 8 games back, with a 34-35 record. That gives them an overall 65-74 record for the season.

Marauders Win Second Half Title; Walk-Off Homer For Gonzalez

Sunday's action with the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates... this is the season finale for the Spikes, and the regular season finale for the Marauders.

West Virginia Power 4, Hagerstown Suns 3 .... (box)

Elevys Gonzalez was the hero in the bottom of the 10th inning with a blast over the right-center field wall for a walk-off homer. The Suns had scored first with a solo home run off Power starter Eliecer Navarro to lead off the 2nd inning and another solo blast to begin the 4th inning. Navarro scattered 5 more hits over the rest of the first 5 innings without allowing a run to score. He began the 6th inning by giving up a walk, then an RBI double to give the Suns their third run. Maurice Bankston relieved Navarro to finish the 6th inning, then went on to pitch 2 scoreless innings.

The Power got one run back in the bottom of the 4th, with the help of 3 consecutive walks. CF Evan Chambers walked first, but was caught stealing second base. Walks to 1B Aaron Baker and DH Jose Hernandez put two runners on base, then C Ramon Cabrera skipped a ground-rule double over the left-center field wall, scoring Baker. A pop out ended the inning without any further scoring.

The bottom of the 7th began with the Power trailing 3-1. Cabrera led off with a line drive single up the middle, then LF Rogelios Noris doubled, and 3B Andy Vasquez tripled, tying the score as both Cabrera and Noris scored. Vasquez was cut down after rounding third base, on the throw in from the outfield.

Bankston hit a batter with a pitch in the bottom of the 8th, but left him stranded. Jhonathan Ramos pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th. The Power went down in order in ther 8th. Noris singled and stole second base in the bottom of the 9th, but could not come around to score, and the game went into extra innings. Ramos gave up a one-out single in the top of the 10th, but then struck out the next two batters. That set up the bottom of the 10th, when Elevys Gonzalez greeted the new Suns' reliever with the game-winning homer.

Owens Wins #12, Two Homers For Hague As Curve Clinch Title

Tuesday's action for the Pirates' lower minor leaguers....

Altoona Curve 9, Bowie Baysox 1 .. (box)

The Altoona Curve clinched the Eastern League's Western Division title tonight with a win over Bowie. This is just the second time the Curve have won their division in their 12 years of existence, and it follows a 2009 when the Curve spent the season in the cellar.

Six different Curve batters had 2 hits in the game, and 1B Matt Hague's two hits were both home runs. The batters provided plenty of run support for starter Rudy Owens, who won his 12th game of the season. Owens pitched 6 scoreless innings, and struck out 9 Bowie batters. Owens allowing 2 singles in the 1st inning but kept the Baysox scoreless thanks to an on-target throw in from RF Miles Durham to C Hector Gimenez, to tag out the lead runner at the plate. Owens retired the next 11 batters in order, then gave up back-to-back singles in the 5th. A strikeout ended that inning -- he struck out 3 batters in the 5th, and two more in the 6th to finish up his night.

Derek Hankins earned his 7th save with 3 innings of work. He gave up a lead-off homer to the first batter he faced in the 7th inning, and that was Bowie's only run of the game. Hankins loaded the bases with three singles following the homer, but got out of the inning with a strikeout. He allowed only one more hit over the next two innings and struck out a total of 5 batters.

Meanwhile, the Curve batters were steadily stacking up the runs, scoring in 6 of their 9 at-bats. Bowie held them off in the 1st inning, despite loading the bases on singles by 3B Josh Harrison and SS Jordy Mercer, and a walk to DH Andrew Lambo. Two strikeouts strikeouts ended the inning without a run scoring. After that, the Curve took off. Durham singled and CF Anthony Norman tripled for one run in the 2nd inning (1). Hague was hit by a pitch, then singles by Gimenez and 2B Jim Negrych brought in 2 runs in the 3rd (3). Hague homered for the first time, a solo shot, in the 5th (4). Two more runs came in during the 6th. Norman walked, and LF Jose De Los Santos reached on a fielding error. Harrison doubled, plating Norman (5), and Mercer's ground out brought in De Los Santos (6). In the 7th, Negrych singled and scored on Norman's double (7). Hague homered again in the 8th inning, this time with Mercer on base with a single (9).

Three Curve position players have been named to participate in the Arizona Fall League: OF Andrew Lambo, INF Josh Harrison, and INF Jordy Mercer will be with the Mesa Solar Sox. Joining them will be C Tony Sanchez. (Each team is allowed one A-level player.) The Pirates are also allowed three pitchers, though those assignments have not yet been determined. The Arizona Fall League begins play in mid-October.

Curve Split Two, Owens Wins #11, Cain Wins #1

Lots of action for the Pirates' minor league affiliates on Thursday....

Richmond Flying Squirrels 9, Altoona Curve 6 (Game 1).. (box)

This was the wrap-up of a suspended game from... awhile back. 2B Jordy Mercer had 3 hits in the game with an RBI, and LF Jim Negrych had a single, a double, and an RBI for the Curve. The Curve scored first, with 3 runs in the bottom of hte 1st, on a double by 3B Shelby Ford, an RBI single by Mercer, walks to both C Kris Watts and LF Brandon Jones (back when he was still on the team), and a 2-RBI single by RF Miles Durham.

Richmond came back to tie the score with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, on four singles and a throwing error by 1B Matt Hague. Then they took the lead with another 3 runs in the top of the 3rd, on a walk and three doubles. Starter Tim Alderson was responsible for 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and a walk over 3 innings. Dustin Molleken took over for Alderson, and retired the side in the top of the 4th inning. The Curve began the bottom of the inning with a walk to Durham, a single by CF Anthony Norman, and a sacrifice bunt by Molleken, to put both runners into scoring position. That was when play was halted. When the game resumed, SS Chase d'Arnaud singled, scoring Durham. PH/3B Josh Harrison grounded to short, which let Norman score also. Mercer singled again, but was left on base. The Curve had closed the gap, 6-5

Derek Hankins took over for Molleken after the restart. He pitched 5 innings, scattering two hits and a walk over the first four of those innings. The Curve also put runners on base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but did not score.

In the top of the 9th, Hankins gave up a single and an RBI double, then three more singles, increasing Richmond's lead to 9-5. The Curve got one of the runs back in the bottom of the 9th, when Hague walked, and moved to third on a fielding error that also put Watts on base. Jim Negrych singled into left field, bringing in Hague from third. Watts also tried to score, coming from second base, but he was out at the plate on the throw in from left field, ending the game.

Curve 5, Flying Squirrels 1 (Game 2).. (box)

The Curve turned the tables in the second game, which was scheduled for only 7 innings. Rudy Owens buzzed through 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits and one walk, while striking out 5 batters. He surrendered a single in the 2nd and a double in the 4th, then a walk in the 6th. It was Owens' 11th win of the season. Daniel Moskos wrapped things up in the 7th inning. He loaded the bases with two walks and a single. A grounder force out brought in Richmond's only run, but then Moskos ended the game with a strikeout.

2B Jordy Mercer's bat was still hot, as he collected another 2 hits. He and LF Jim Negrych both singled in the 4th, then C Hector Gimenez reached on a throwing error, which brought in Negrych with the first run of the game. A walk to 3B Josh Harrison and singles by 1B Matt Hague and Mercer scored Harrison with another run in the 5th. SS Chase d'Arnaud added three more runs with a 3-run homer in the 6th, also plating CF Anthony Norman, who had walked, and pinch-hitter Andrew Lambo, who had singled.

Bullpen Falters As Indians Lose Late

Louisville Bats 6, Indianapolis Indians 3 .. (box)

IMG_4467It was a tough night for the Indians' bullpen, as they stumbled in the last two innings, giving the win to the Louisville Bats at Victory Field. The Indians wasted an excellent starting effort by Charlie Morton (photo), who pitched 6 shutout innings and allowed only 4 hits. The Indians posted 5 hits, while the Bats out-hit them with 13 knocks.

Morton got some help from his defense, but he cruised along in this start. He faced only the minimum over the first three innings, and only one batter over the minimum in the first five innings. He began each of the first three innings with a strikeout, and struck out one more batter after that.

The second batter in the top of the 1st, SS Chris Valaika, slipped a single up through the middle of the infield, where 2B Brian Friday would have been if the Indians' defense was not in a shift position. The next batter, 1B Yonder Alonso, also grounded up the middle, right over the second base bag. SS Pedro Ciriaco made a diving stop, and as he hit the ground stretched out prone behind second base, the ball fell out of his glove, Ciriaco scrambled to pick it up, then still on the ground, flipped the ball back and lateral to Friday covering second base. Friday was at the bag, and he made an outstanding turn, and fired the ball to 1B John Bowker, just in time to beat Alonso to the first base bag.

Morton retired the side in order in the 2nd and 3rd innings, then gave up a lead-off single to CF Dave Sappelt in the 4th -- the ball glanced off 3B Mitch Jones' glove and into left field. But again the infield stepped up. Valaika grounded to third base, where Jones started an around-the-horn (5-4-3) double play to erase Sappelt. Alonso almost put the Bats onto the scoreboard with a long fly ball to left field. The ball hit the top of the left field wall, missing a home run by inches, then bounced into left field for a double. Morton did not erase Alonso from the base path, but instead struck out the next batter, RF Wladimir Balentien, to end the inning.

IMG_4480The Bats also went down in order in the 5th, and that inning ended with an odd play. 2B Wilkin Castillo bunted a 1-1 pitch to right in front of the plate, but as he was moving out of the batters' box, he came in contact with the ball, so was called out. C Jason Jaramillo, as the closest fielder, gets credit for the put-out in that situation.

The only time Charlie Morton had two base runners on base at the same time was in the 6th inning. With one out, Bats' pitcher Chad Reineke dribbled a little grounder (not a bunt) along the third base line, just fair. By the time Morton and Jaramillo got over to it, Morton picked up the ball, but he had no play at first, and Reineke was on with an infield hit. Sappelt followed with a grounder to short, and it looked like Morton was going to have yet another base runner erased with a double play. Pedro Ciriaco made the scoop, but he got excited and his throw to second missed Brian Friday entirely, and sailed into right field. Reineke advanced to third and Sappelt to second on the error. With the Indians leading 2-0 at that point, those two runners in scoring position represented the tying runs, and the go-ahead run was at the plate. Pitching coach Dean Treanor came out for a little chat with Morton (photo). Then Morton got Valaika to ground softly to third base, and the runners had to hold up. Another grounder by Alonso to short ended the inning for Morton, and without a run scoring.

Owens Wins #10

Pirates' lower minor leaguers on Saturday...

Altoona Curve 10, Binghamton Mets 4 (box)

The Curve posted 14 hits, with two big innings, as all but one member of the starting line-up had at least one hit in the game, as starter Rudy Owens earned his 10th win of the season. SS Jordy Mercer doubled three times and 1B Matt Hague doubled twice, with 4 RBI. Even Owens doubled, walked, and scored twice.

Owens got off to a little bit of a shaky start on the mound. He gave up a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly to begin the bottom of the 1st. A single and a double gave the Mets a second run in the 3rd. Owens settled in after that, and allowed just one hit in each of the 4th and 5th.

The Curve got one run back in the top of the 4th, after putting runners on base in each of the first three innings but failing to score. In the 4th, Mercer hit his first double, and he scored on RF Miles Durham's RBI single. Then they broke through in the 5th. Owens led off the inning with a walk. LF Jose De Los Santos singled, then 3B Josh Harrison bunted both runners into scoring position. 2B Jim Negrych was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hague cleared the bases with a double into left field, then Mercer hit his second double (this one was a ground-rule double), plating Hague. The Curve had a 5-2 lead.

The next inning began with a solo home run by Miles Durham. One out later, Owens doubled, and De Los Santos singled. A fielding error on a ball hit to third by Harrison let Owens score. Negrych brought in both Owens and De Los Santos with another double, and Hague made it three doubles in the inning with his 26th of the season, bringing in Negrych with the fifth run of the inning. The Curve were up, 10-2.

Mike Colla relieved Owens to begin the 6th. He gave up a solo homer in that inning, and another solo homer in the 8th, but retired the other 12 batters he faced in 4 innings. Owens earned his 10th win of the season, and Colla earned his first save.

Curve Lose In Extras; Marauders Split Twin Bill

Sunday's games in the Pirates' lower minor leagues were partially hampered by rain.... The GCL Pirates again had today off.

The State College Spikes and the Aberdeen IronBirds fell victim to rain. That game will not be made up, as the Spikes are not scheduled to play Aberdeen again this season. Tomorrow is an off day for the Spikes, then on Tuesday, Matt Curry, Adalberto Santos, and Jhonatan Ramos will be participating in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

West Virginia Power 3, Lexington Legends 3 -- suspended (box)

The Power and the Legends were supposed to play 2 games today, making up for last night's rainout. They got started on Game 1, but got only into the third inning (of a 7-inning game) before the rain returned. That game was suspended and the second game was postponed.

The game began with a scoreless first inning for both teams. In the top of the 2nd, LF Rogelios Noris and C Ramon Cabrera both singled, then with two outs, 1B Kyle Morgan blasted a 3-run homer. The Legends responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame on four singles. With one out in the top of the 3rd, the game was suspended. They will try to finish this one, then play a second game tomorrow.

New Hampshire FisherCats 3, Altoona Curve 2 (box)

More extra innings for the Curve and the FisherCats, but this one went New Hampshire's way. The Curve threatened in the 2nd inning, when both 1B Matt Hague and 2B Jordy Mercer led off with back-to-back singles. DH Jim Negrych's grounder forced out Hague at third, and C Kris Watts walked to load the bases. Another ground out ended the inning, though. A triple by SS Chase d'Arnaud and a sacrifice fly by 3B Josh Harrison in the 3rd inning did put the Curve onto the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead. They scored again in the 5th on an exciting play. CF Jose De Los Santos began with a single. D'Arnaud grounded to short, for what should have been a double play, but the New Hampshire second baseman missed the catch, and both runners were safe. De Los Santos tagged up and advanced to third on a fly out, then stole home in a double steal.

Rudy Owens pitched 5 scoreless innings in his start for the Curve, striking out 6 batters. He scattered 5 hits, no walks, and only had more than one runner on base at a time in the 3rd, but got out of it with a strikeout and a ground out. Jared Hughes relieved Owens to start the 6th. Hughes walked a batter then erased him with a double play in the 6th. In the 7th, Hughes hit the first batter, CF Callix Crabbe with a pitch. Crabbe stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single. That batter was thrown out at second base by RF Miles Durham when he tried to stretch his single into a double. Moments later, a solo home run tied the game at 2-2. Hughes also pitched the 8th, and again gave up a walk and erased the runner with a double play.

The tie continued as the Curve went down in order in the 7th. D'Arnaud was hit with a pitch in the 8th, was bunted to second by Harrison, then stole third base, but was left stranded. Daniel Moskos worked around a lead-off single to keep the tie going in the top of the 9th. Jim Negrych singled in the bottom of the inning, but was erased in a double play. Derek Hankins retired the FisherCats in order in the top of the 10th. Kris Watts singled in the bottom of that inning, and was replaced by pinch-runner Anthony Norman, who was also left on base.

Hankins came out again for the 11th. With two outs, he gave up a single, then an RBI double to Crabbe, and the FisherCats had the 3-2 lead. Matt Hague walked with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but a grounder off the bat of Negrych forced out Hague at second base to end the game.

Jakubauskas Begins Rehab (Again); Power Get Over-Powered

Action for the Pirates' lower minor affiliates on Tuesday... The Bradenton Marauders were rained out. They'll play a double header against Palm Beach today.

GCL Phillies 5, GCL Pirates 0 (box)

The Phillies dominated the Pirates for the second day in a row, adding 12 hits today to their 19 hits yesterday. Righty pitcher Chris Jakubauskas made his first appearance in a game in months but suffered the loss with a 3-inning start for the Pirates. He gave up one run on 3 hits and 2 walks. The run scored in the 3rd inning. on a single, a wild pitch and an RBI ground out. Kevin Kleis also gave up one run in his 2 innings of work, on two singles with a stolen base in the 5th. Rinku Singh made his longest appearance to date, going 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Two runs scored in the 6th, on two doubles, a hit batter, a walk, and a wild pitch. A single and a double added another run for the Phillies in the 8th.

The Pirates were held to 5 hits -- a double by DH Justin Howard, and singles by CF Junior Sosa, 3B Eric Avila, C Elias Diaz, and 1B Dylan Child. The Pirates came closest to scoring in the 6th, when Howard doubled and Avila followed with a single into left field. Howard tried to score from second on the throw, but was tagged out at the plate. That was also the only inning in which more than one Pirate was on base at the same time.

Owens Dominates In 9th Win; Spikes Are One-Hit

A few roster moves: The Pirates have designated pitcher Steven Jackson for assignment, so that a roster space on both the 25-man and 40-man rosters will be available. That will make room for reliefer Chris Resop, who the Pirates picked up off waivers from the Braves today.

1B/OF Steve Pearce's surgery on his knee went fine, and he is expected to be out of commission for at least 4 months. He has been moved to the 60-day disabled list, which frees up another spot on the 40-man roster. That will be taken by reliever Chan Ho Park, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from the Yankees today. The Pirates will still need to open a spot on the 25-man roster, but they will have a couple more days to do that, since Park won't be joining the team until Friday.

And, today's action in the Pirates' minor league organization..... The Indianapolis Indians had a scheduled day off today; the West Virginia Power's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds was rained out, so they'll try again tomorrow.

Altoona Curve 5, Akron Aeros 1 (box)

Starter Rudy Owens pitched another stellar start, going 6 innings and allowing only a solo home run to the second batter he faced in the top of the 1st. After that homer, Owens retired the next 17 batters he faced, including 4 strikeouts. Tom Boleska relieved Owens and earned his second save with the Curve. He pitched 3 scoreless innings and allowed only a triple and a walk, with 2 strikeouts. The triple was hit by Jason Kipnis, the first batter Boleska faced. After a short fly out, Kipnis tried to tag up and score on another short fly out to new Curve LF Andrew Lambo. Lambo's throw to C Kris Watts was on target and on time, and Kipnis was thrown out at the plate.

The Curve posted 13 hits and gave Owens and Boleska 5 runs worth of support. 2B Chase d'Arnaud had 3 of the hits, all singles, and four Curve batters, Lambo, Watts, 1B Matt Hague, and RF Miles Durham each had 2 hits. The first Altoona run scored in the 2nd inning. Durham singled, CF Anthony Norman walked, and a fielding error allowed Durham to score. Lambo walked to lead off the 2nd inning rally. A single by Hague and a double by Watts followed, with Watts picking up the RBI. A sacrifice fly by Norman brought in Hague with the second run of the inning.

Singles by d'Arnaud and 3B Josh Harrison led off the 4th inning, and a double steal moved both into scoring position. Hague's RBI single plated d'Arnaud. Watts walked to load the bases, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the inning. The Curve scored their final run of the game in the 7th inning without a hit. SS Yung Chi Chen and DH Jose De Los Santos worked back-to-back walks, and both advanced a base on d'Arnaud's sacrifice bunt. Harrison's sacrifice fly brought in Chen with the Curve's 5th run of the game.

Marauders On A Rampage

Thursday's action.... I'll be on the road for the next several days, and internet connections may be spotty.

Bradenton Marauders 18, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 (box)

The Marauders scored 13 runs in the final three innings of the game and posted a total of 19 hits, as they sent the Tigers flying. Each member of the Marauders' line-up had at least one hit, all but two walked at least once, and six recorded RBIs. Four of them -- 2B Shelby Ford, C Eric Fryer, DH Jordan Newton, and SS Adenson Chourio -- had 3 hits each. Of the 19 hits, only 5 were extra-base hits -- 3 doubles, and 2 triples, but no home runs.

The game started out with some low-key scoring. The Marauders put up one run in the top of the 1st, when Shelby Ford singled and scored on Eric Fryer's triple. Lakeland came back with 3 runs on 4 singles and a double in the bottom of the 2nd, to take a 3-1 lead.

The Marauders returned fire in the top of the 4th. LF Quincy Latimore led off with a double. After two outs, three consecutive singles by Newton, CF Austin McClune, and Chourio brought in two runs, and Ford doubled, plating two more runs. Bradenton up, 5-3.

Brian Leach pitched the first 5 innings for the Marauders, allowing those 3 runs on 7 hits and a walk, with 5 strikeouts. He was relieved by Craig Hansen to begin the 6th, Hansen's first time back on the mound in a live game situation in over a year. Hansen gave up a single, then got a strikeout, but followed that with three consecutive walks, forcing in a run. He was relieved by Casey Erickson, who gave up a sacrifice fly for another run (charged to Hansen), then a single. The throw in from McClune in center field to Fryer at the plate was right on target, and Fryer was able to tag out another runner as he tried to score. Erickson was charged with a Blown Save, as the game was now tied at 5-5.

At that point, the Marauders really got going. They took the lead back again (and gave Erickson the win) with 2 runs in the top of the 7th. Three walks, to Grossman, Fryer, and 1B Calvin Anderson, loaded the bases. Newton singled up the middle, scoring both Grossman and Fryer. The 8th inning began with a single by Chourio, a triple by Ford (one run in), and a single by Fryer, scoring Ford (2). After a pitching change, Latimore and 3B Adam Davis both walked. A wild pitch and a throwing error allowed Fryer and Anderson to score (3, 4), and a single by Newton brought in Davis (5). Eight batters had come to the plate in the 8th, and the score was 12-5.

Twelve Marauders' batters came to the plate in the 9th, and 6 more runs came in. With one out, Chourio walked and Ford reached on a throwing error. Grossman's double scored Chourio and Ford (1,2). Four singles follwed, by Fryer (Grossman scores -- 3), Latimore, Anderson, and Adams. Adams' single brought in Fryer and Latimore (4, 5). After a pop out, McClune and Chourio singled, plating Anderson (6).

Erickson pitched 2 more scoreless innings, and Noah Krol pitched a scoreless 9th inning, with a walk and a single, plus 2 strikeouts.

Irwin: 7 No-Hit Innings; Marauders Drop Two

A few roster notes: RHP Teddy Fallon and LHP Justin Ennis were both promoted from State College to West Virginia. Fallon was the Pirates' 43rd pick in the 2009 draft, and Ennis was the 33rd round pick in this year's draft. RHP Tom Boleska has been promoted from Bradenton to Altoona.

Altoona's Bryan Morris has skipped a start, which the Pirates are calling just a "breather". He has struggled in his last few starts, but has also stacked up the innings so far this season (103) and the Pirates want him to stay below 140 innings this season.

Phillip Irwin pitched 7 no-hit innings for the Power tonight, before he had to be relieved due to his increasing pitch count. Irwin struck out 8 batters in his 7 innings, and he allowed 2 walks. He got off to a strong start when he struck out the side in the 1st inning, then struck out 2 more in the 2nd. The first walk came in the 3rd inning, but that runner was immediately erased when the next batter lined right to 1B Aaron Baker, who stepped on first base for a double play. The next 7 batters went down in order, until the 6th, when that same batter, C Sandy Leon, walked again. This time Leon was forced out at second on a grounder, and another ground out ended the inning. Irwin wrapped up his amazing evening with two more strikeouts in the 7th inning.

Ryan Kelly relieved Irwin and pitched the final two innings. He allowed one hit, but it was a solo home run. He also walked a batter in the 9th, and struck out 2 batters.

The rest of the team was busy giving Irwin and Kelly plenty of run support. They piled up 16 hits, with everyone in the lineup reaching base at least one time, and all but SS Benji Gonzalez picking up at least one hit (Gonzalez had a walk). 3B Elevys Gonzalez, Aaron Baker, and LF Rogelios Noris each had 3 hits. Baker led off the 2nd inning with a solo home run. CF David Rubinstein followed the homer with a double, and Noris added a single to put runners on the corners. C Jairo Marquez lined a single into center field, scoring Rubinstein to give the Power an early 2-0 lead.

They boosted that lead in the 3rd inning, as they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs. Six of the first seven batters reached base safely: 2B Jarek Cunningham and RF Jose Hernandez began with back-to-back singles, and Baker's double scored Cunningham (#1 run). Rubinstein's sacrifice fly brought in Hernandez (#2). Noris and DH Kyle Morgan goth singled, and Baker scored (#3). Marquez doubled in Noris and Morgan (#4, 5), and sent the Hagerstown pitcher to the showers. Benji Gonzalez flied out, but Elevys Gonzalez singled, plating Marquez (#6). A fielding error on that play moved Elevys G to second base, and a wild pitch put him on third. Cunningham's second single in the inning brought in Elevys G (#7), before a line out ended the inning.

The Power put at least one baserunner on in all but one of the remaining innings, but none of them were able to come around to score.
