WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
The Pirates selected Scott in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He had moved on to independent ball after Seattle cut him loose during the 2010 season. He signed with the Angels after the season, but never played for them. He was obviously an organizational catcher for the Mariners. In his last three seasons, he threw out 28% of would-be base stealers.
2006 Debuted in low A, which is a challenging assignment for a JC draftee. Scott struggled with the strike zone and didn’t hit a great deal. 2007 Moved up to high A and put up good numbers, with much-improved command of the strike zone. He hit 13 HRs in about half a season. The hitting numbers can’t be taken very seriously, as Scott was playing at High Desert, which is probably the most extreme hitter’s park in the most extreme hitter’s league. Scott threw out 27% of base stealers. 2008 Despite Scott’s good numbers in 2007, the Mariners sent him back to high A. He didn’t hit for as much power this time. Scott threw out 28% of base stealers and also had a high PB total of 23. 2009 Scott returned to High Desert for a third year and put up numbers similar to his first year there. He again threw out 28% of base stealers. 2010 Scott returned to High Desert yet again for 33 games and also got into four games in AA, but was released and went to independent ball. 2011 Remained with the Pirates all year but was seldom activated. He traveled with Altoona much of the time as a non-roster catcher behind Tony Sanchez and Kris Watts. He got into just 13 games all year, ten with the Curve and three with Bradenton. Scott will be a free agent in the fall. The organization doesn’t seem to have a role for him so he seems unlikely to return. |
