SCOUTING REPORT
|
Williams is the son of Eddie Williams, who spent parts of ten years in the majors, including 89 at-bats for the 1997 Pittsburgh Pirates in the final two months of the season. Trey profiles as a power hitting third baseman, and projects to have the abilities to stay at the position, even in the pro ranks.
On defense, Williams has a strong arm, good hands, and enough range to stick at third base. He played shortstop at the start of his high school career, but moved to third base after his body filled out. He’s got some impressive numbers at the plate, highlighted by a lot of power over the last two years, with a home run every 9.33 at-bats in 2011. Williams has excellent strength and bat speed, which lead to those numbers. His big weakness has been quality breaking balls. He also doesn’t have much speed, profiling only as an average runner. Williams is more of a long term pick than a short term answer since he’s coming out of the prep ranks. He would be a huge reach for the Pirates in the first round, but he could provide some value if he falls to them at 45th overall in the sandwich round. |
