WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES |
Payne obviously didn’t pitch well in his first JC season. Control was a particular problem. He reaches 92 but has been more in the upper 80s as a pro. The Pirates must consider him a project.
2010 Payne pitched much better than in junior college. He was probably the best pitcher on the GCL Pirates, with good control but a low K rate. Opponents hit only .222 against him. The Pirates moved him up to State College after the GCL season ended and he did well in two appearances there. 2011 Payne pitched strictly in relief in 2011, initially at State College. He wasn’t very effective there, although his K rate improved a little. The Pirates promoted him to West Virginia late in the season when they needed some arms there. He only allowed nine hits in 11.1 IP, but he fanned only three while walking six. Payne pitched 2011 at age 20 and still doesn’t have a lot of experience. He started 2012 in extended spring training and could appear at State College or West Virginia, or possibly both. |
