WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Reed was throwing 91-94 mph, reaching 95, at the time of the draft, with a potentially good curve.  At 21, he was old for a JC player, so scouts had doubts about his projection, but his stuff was already good enough to allow him to put up high K rates.  As a reliever in 2016 at Shepherd University in West Virginia, he didn’t allow a run until the final game of the season, though that was in limited time.  He threw 13.1 innings, striking out 20 batters.  In 2017, he transferred to Hartford and moved to the starting rotation, where he had a 2.38 ERA in 56.2 innings, with 78 strikeouts.  Reed allowed just 35 hits, but he also walked 33 batters, so he appears to have some control issues.  Baseball America thought he could be drafted in the first ten rounds, but he lasted until round 20.  He had a commitment to West Virginia, but signed with the Pirates for the slot amount.

2017
R+:  0-0-0, 9.00 ERA, 2.50 WHIP, 2.0 IP, 4.5 BB/9, 4.5 K/9

Reed got into just one game with Bristol and suffered an elbow injury that required rehab.

2018
R:  0-1-0, 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 3.2 IP, 7.4 BB/9, 9.8 K/9

Reed got into four games early in the GCL season, but was shut down in early July.

Reed hasn’t had much luck getting healthy so far.  He’ll try again in 2019.
